Events April-December 2010
City of Clearlake
The 2009/2010 series of weekly Dharma talks called "Buddhist Philosophy" has concluded and the next series is expected to start in late Oct/early Nov this year. Hopefully the same Clearlake Methodist Church will have space available, as this venue has worked out very well.
Calistoga - Dharma Meetings
As at Clearlake, a hiatus in the talks will take place until probably November this year. We would hope to hold the next series in the same location, the Calistoga Community Center.
Until then other activities, mostly at the Monastery, will fill the time. We have finished the preliminary plans for a monastic dormitory to house up to 9 monks, and plan to get some work done on the infrastructure during the summer, including water and power supply, driveway and septic.
U.C. Berkeley 23 April 2010 - Exhibit and Conference (UPDATED DEC 2009)
The proposed calligraphy exhibit has now been confirmed. It will show for two months from April 1 to June 1. Of the 37 works produced by 23 Tendai priests in Japan (2002-2007), approximately 21 will be selected and displayed. The formal opening, marked by an all-day conference under the direction of Professor of Japanese Buddhism Duncan Ryuken Williams, will take place on Friday April 23rd and is titled "TENDAI STUDIES AND ARTS SYMPOSIUM." Here is the lineup:
MORNING SESSION.
The keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Shoshin Ichishima of Taisho U. In 1974-5 he served as a lecturer at UC, and he is also a venerable Buddhist priest with temples in Chiba-ken. Two more talks will follow, one by Professor Hodo Shioiri of Taisho U. and one by the American Tendai scholar Paul Groner of U Virginia. He is the author of "Saicho" and "Ryogen."
AFTERNOON SESSION.
Ven. Monshin Paul Naamon, head of the Tendai sect in America, will introduce the speakers: John Stevens, author of the popular "Sacred Calligraphy of the East." His lecture is titled "An Illustrated History of Tendai Calligraphy." Professor Stevens also wrote the great exposition of Tendai called "Marathon Monks of Mt Hiei;" Professor of Art History Elizabeth ten Grotenhuis, author of "Japanese Mandalas;" and Ven Senkei Shibayama, one of the calligraphers and the author of "Saicho no Sho." After his talk, Ven Shibayama, assisted by two colleagues, will demonstrate Tendai calligraphy.
This will be followed by a reception for the opening of the exhibit. The full schedule, along with lecture titles, is found on the blog.
SATURDAY EVENT: On the following day, Saturday April 24, the Japanese contingent will travel to Cobb Mountain 2 hours north to do a ceremony (rakkei shiki) celebrating the founding of a new temple. All are welcome to attend.
SUNDAY EVENT: On April 25, at the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley, Ven. Senkei Shibayama, master of shodo and author of "Saicho No Sho" will perform dynamic calligraphy with the giant brush. All are welcome to attend. (Download PDF with full details)
