THE PRIEST'S STAFF CALLED SHAKUJO
Along with mantra and goma practices, the mountain-walking meditation known as kaihogyo is emphasized at this monastery. Although sites for such a practice are common in Japan, having been established in ancient times, finding a site in America was difficult in the extreme, mostly due to the nature of land-ownership here.
A proper route for an effective experience would provide (1) assurance of seclusion from human contact for at least 6 hours so that one can concentrate on mantras, and (2) an elevation difference of at least 2000ft for the physical and nature-spirit aspects of the climb.
